BIOL 3050: Biomedical Ethics
Ian Malcom in the first Jurassic Park said it best:
"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
This course explores controversial topics in biology and medicine such as physician assisted suicide, abortion, genocide, gene editing, human embryo manipulation, and mental health. We also consider how culture, history, religion, economics, and politics play a major role in scientific decisions. The ultimate goal of this course is for students to evaluate their own beliefs and opinions through a new lens, while understanding the viewpoints of others.
Course topics change each semester. This class relies heavily on primary literature, discussion style class work and writing.
