Student Mentees
Jeremy Evans
Jeremy's interest in fish science made him a perfect fit to help me design and build a stand alone tank system to establish a zebrafish colony at Southern Utah University. Zebrafish are very popular model organisms and commercially available tank systems can cost $1,000s. Jeremy and I were able to design and build a 27 tank system to house over 500 fish for less than $800. Our design is extremely effective with an annual maintenance cost of less than $100. Additionally, we established proper protocols for maintenance and water quality. Jeremy presented all of his hard work at the 2017 Festival of Excellence. |
Staci Thompson, Samantha Kerr & Rylie Miller
I first met Sam, Rylie, and Staci as freshman and it was instantly apparent that they were talented writers. Therefore, I recruited them to serve as Writing Fellows. Their peer mentorship has proven invaluable to many freshman biology students whom are attempting to write a scientific manuscript for the first time. They have also been invaluable in helping me design my curriculum. In February 2017, they were invited to share their insight at the Southern California Region Writing Tutors Conference in Oceanside CA. Additionally, they presented their work at the 2017 Festival of Excellence. |
